It seems to be a bit of a mixed bag having the President of the United States being from the Chicago area. Sure, it’s very cool to have someone you like and from your town in the most powerful office in the country. We sure pulled out all of the stops we could pull out to party when it happens. The problem is, there seems to be a double-edge to that particular sword. I am speaking mostly about the roads.
Lately the construction signs have been cropping up like some strange form of alien weed all over Chicago. Now, as I have mentioned before, this is something we are used to in Chicago. There are only two seasons here, winter and construction. However, this time there is just something slightly different.
Now, in front of many of these construction sites there are signs that indicate whatever work is being done is part of some “Economic Stimulus” thingie. In short, the job is there to give people work and, in theory, get the economy moving again. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am all for putting people to work and getting the economy working again, but I also would like to be able to drive three blocks without having to merge into oncoming traffic while eight guys stand around a hole, looking into it, while one little guy stands down there with a jackhammer or shovel.
I don’t know if this is going on in cities like New York or Los Angeles or Washington D.C. or if the Prez is using Chicago, his former home town, as some kind of test city. Heck, he might be thinking, this would really be great if I really stimulate the economy in Chicago because that’s where I cam from. So, I am going to pour construction projects on that town like you wouldn’t believe.
The problem is, as I mentioned just yesterday, this city as about as corrupt as a three dollar bill with Mayor Daley’s face on it. You just know that whatever economic stimulus projects or dollars are being funneled into this town are being funneled right back out again and into things that are probably less than legit. Now, I have no idea if this is the case or not, but I do know that construction projects around this town are handed out as thank yous for political donations and things of that nature, so even when things are normal the construction around here is dubious.
You can tell just by the nature of the projects. One of the favorite projects around here is to dig up rectangles and squares in the concrete and along the rows are regular intervals. They just dig out these little squares without any seeming rhyme or reason. It just closes down a lane on a major highway and gives a bunch of guys in construction helmets an excuse to stand around and smoke and watch the chaos they are creating by closing down the construction lanes.
I think we can expect more of those lovely construction projects. Despite the rectangle digging every year those roads are a mess again after winter is over. So, what was the point of all of that chaos created in the summer? Well, maybe it’s to put people to work and stimulate the economy right? Sure, everything sure looks better out there, doesn’t it?
There are roads that still have craters in them and they are not being touched. At the same time, main roads are completely shut down thanks to economic stimulus. I don’t get it and I just wish the places that need fixing get fixed. Let’s start with whoever decides what roads get dug up and fixed and which ones don’t.
