The Planet killers

October 5th 2009 13:31
I don’t understand people, even though I am a fan of history and history has been full of people denying things that are right in front of their noses. There was a time that people thought the world was flat because when ships sailed away it looked like they just fell off the end of the earth. Then there were those who saw the sun in the sky and assumed it was the celestial body that was moving and that it was circling around the earth. There were those who thought that certain women were witches and that they had ways to prove it. There were those who were certain that tobacco and cigarettes did nothing to cause lung cancer at one time. Just like, today, there are those with their heads buried in the sand about global warming, our planet, and the very real fact that we are the cause of it.

Sure, sure, I know that in the 1970s there were people running around claiming we were at the start of a new ice age. I get that. I understand that scientists are sometimes wrong. The thing with the scientific community is that they strive to prove each other wrong and that a scientist, when he first comes up with a hypothesis, then spend hours and hours and hours trying to prove himself or herself wrong.

In the rest of the world we spend hours and hours and hours trying to prove ourselves right or, if we can’t do that, at least convince a few people we are right and then trying to get everyone else to believe it too. That’s what happens with most political discussions these days. Everyone wants to believe so passionately that they are right they fight anyone and everyone.

The facts seem to show that the planet, however, is dying. There seems to be no way to deny this. When you take photos of the Arctic and the Antarctic and compare them to photos a few years old, you can see that the amount of ice there is melting. What’s funny to me is how many conservative types spent forever screaming that it was all a bunch of crap and that it wasn’t even happening and how many, now, say they believe it’s happening but that it has nothing to do with humans and that there is nothing we can do about it.

Really? This is going to be the theory they propose? When it seems obvious that the planet was going along just fine until humans started pouring so much pollution into the air that thing began to change, how can you argue that this is just something natural? It seems very unnatural to me. Also, what kind of spirit is that to take? Well, the planet is just getting warmer, I didn’t do it, so there is nothing I can do to stop it, so, oh well!

Yeah, that’s a great attitude to take. Just throw up your hands and not try to do anything to reverse the destruction of the planet itself. Sure, doing so much inconvenience big business and industry so we had better just keep going on as if nothing is happening and there’s nothing we can do about. Right, and the band kept playing as the Titanic sank.

The fact is we have an obligations as the caretakers of this planet to do something to save it. If you believe in God then you know He put us in charge of this planet and I am betting he didn’t want us to break it. So, we can’t hide. We can’t just throw up our hands. If not for us, then for those who come after us.

Well said, Bryan. Some people just knew the ways to push all the responsibilities away from them, by simply blaming on this, that or those...

By the way, have you watched the documentary from BBC, "Earth, The Climate Wars" yet? It's a three chapters documentaries that pointed out how ignorant and arrogant the human beings, when they're dealing with global warming!
