The insane walkers and crazy drivers

July 14th 2009 13:44
I am not sure if this is a phenomenon just in Chicago or if it’s an epidemic that has started to spread across the globe, but something has happened to people who walk and people who drive. I don’t know if people are just so impatient that waiting more than thirty seconds at an intersection has become too much of a wait for most people, or what, but it has to stop.

When I was a kid you were taught to stand there at the corner and wait for an adequate space between cars and traffic to then step into traffic and cross the street. These days, you can witness just about any intersection and see people diving out into traffic as long as there is just a few seconds worth of a gap between cars. They glare at you if you honk at them, as if they are the ones who decide the flow of traffic or daring you to do or say something.

What are you going to do? It’s not like you can hit them. Maybe there should be a “Death Race 2000” (the original version) twenty-four hour cycle when you are allowed to hit idiots who step out into traffic like that. Why can’t they wait just a few minutes? Often times there is wide open road just behind me, but these people, many times with children in hand, bolt out in front of me. Sometimes they look just one way, as opposed to looking both ways before crossing the street. They are almost begging to be hit.

The same has happened with drivers. There are intersections where there are stop signs but no stoplight and cars have to try and enter the flow of traffic on a major street. I cannot tell you the number of times I have watched cars drive out into the flow of cars when there is just enough space between cars for another car to fit. Rather than waiting just a few more minutes, when the flow of traffic is truly spread out enough to drive through safely, these idiots are in such a hurry they drive right in front of other cars without waiting more than thirty seconds.

Behind these cars at the front of the line are often more cars. I have been honked at or witnesses those behind the one at the front of the line being honked at if they dare to wait more than thirty seconds before trying to turn into traffic.

Again, you should be allowed to hit these people. There certainly are no cops doing anything to stop these people. What has happened? Are we so impatient that waiting for a safe place to turn to move or turn into traffic has become passé? Is getting into a traffic accident worth the chance of getting those few extra seconds in your commute?

I don’t understand it. I still like to sit and wait for a safe amount of space in the flow of traffic. Generally speaking, I also like to drive to intersections with lights rather than try dealing with these psychos.

I think a few people getting hit might knock some sense into these people, but that means I am being insensitive, I suppose. I say, get hit by a Buick a couple of times and maybe that will knock you back to the street corner and keep you there for a while. Maybe if your precious car is damaged a few times, you’ll learn a little patience when waiting to turn.

I just know if the Death Race 2000 thing happens, I want to be Frankenstein.
