The Curse?

July 8th 2009 13:33
Most of us White Sox fans scoff at the idea of a curse in baseball. We try to be practical about it. Other fans like to make fun of Sox fans for not filling the stadium. Well, normally you can tell how well the team is doing by how full the stadium is. If the team is stinking, we feel no obligation to make each game a sell out. Why would we do that? How else can we send a message to management that they had better do something to fix things?

Sox fans admit when their team sucks. They have been sucking pretty well so far this season. As I write this, they are having a bit of a bright spot, but who can say if it will last. One thing that we Sox fans never talked about was any kind of curse. Yes, the White Sox, back in 1919 threw the World Series, but we never believed there was some kind of curse on the team. They didn’t win again because they just weren’t good enough, period.

That isn’t the case for Cubs fans. They love to believe in this silly curse that has to do with a goat. The entire thing is just silly. You can kind of see the curse of Babe Ruth affixed to the Red Sox, but the fact some idiot wasn’t allowed to bring a goat into a stadium seems rather ridiculous.

I think their current problems has to do with the sheer pressure put on them by legions of fans who are demanding a World Series. I mean, seriously, you have over a century of pressure on your back when you step on the mound or onto the field during the playoffs. That’s crazy. Who wouldn’t crack a bit under that kind of pressure?

But then again, you sometimes just have to wonder. Back in 2003 a fan who has become as famous as the team, named Bartman, reached out for a foul ball. People turned him into a villain. Of course, they did not turn into a villain the shortstop who, a play or so later, booted an easy grounder into the outfield. They don’t villianize the rest of the team who could have played like professionals and got past that mistake and won the game, or the game the following night.

Still, that was a pretty freaky play to have happen.

Sometimes things happen during the season that just make you scratch your head. As I write this, one of their pitchers is out for several games after having broken his big toe. How did he do this? He leapt over the dugout railing to run out onto the field after the team won a key victory against the Milwaukee Brewers.

You have to admit, that kind of things is a little freaky.

Now, I am not here to say that there is definitely a curse. I think accidents happen. However, you sometimes do have to wonder if the universe has it in for the Chicago Cubs. I have a lot of family, including my own father, who are Cubs fans. I wouldn’t mind it if they at least made it to the Series.

Of course, I would like to see them crushed once they get there, but then again I am a Sox fan. That 2005 World Series ring is the one thing we can truly hold over the self-righteous Cubs fans right about now.
