More strange tales with balloon dad and attic boy

October 19th 2009 13:30
The tales of the Heene family just get stranger and stranger. At the same time, some of the actions and behavior of the young man named Falcon become a bit clearer if you take the time to look. Over the weekend the sheriff in their particular town in Colorado, a town that must be right out of the show South Park, brought charges against the father, Richard. It turns out, surprise, surprise, the entire thing was a hoax.

See, the dad in this family has a thing about fame. He was on a reality show called Wife Swap once. For some strange reason he also does scientific experiments with his family. I suppose I should put the word scientific in quotes there as, from what I can see, all he does it make large Mylar balloons and sends them up into the air. He apparently was a meteorologist at one time and he also believes he has proof that aliens exist. Finally, he once took acting classes and this is supposedly where he met his current wife.

The oddness in this family just goes beyond anything seen outside of a cult or maybe something involving Charlie Manson. However, the fact that he got his kids involved in a scheme and a scam that he hoped would get him attention and, later on, some kind of TV deal is just beyond pathetic. I mean, I want to be famous too, for the writing I do, but I have yet to commit a crime to get that fame. Silly me, I planned on working hard and putting in my time a the bottom rungs of the literary ladder for a while in hopes of eventually getting some kind of recognition. Hey, I got into a fender-bender the day before writing this blog article and maybe I should try and use that for some fame-grab.

Now it suddenly seems clear just how desperate Richard was and how little Falcon ended up puking on national TV. First, he was so desperate that he tried to convince his kids not only to participate but then to try and lie. Did he not realize that once he lied the kids would need to keep lying over and over and over again to police and reporters and the people who would end up filming his reality show? Did he not think that Falcon would slip up somewhere along the way? We are talking about a 6-year-old kid here, not some master spy. The cops, talking to the kid, were likely to get him to tell the truth at some point. He isn’t exactly a hardened Al Qaeda terrorist here with training to resist questioning. His plan was doomed to failure. Kids like to eventually speak the truth, especially when scared or cornered.

So, Falcon said, “We did it for the show” at one point and the game was over. The questions really started there. You just know that after that show was over the psycho dad was screaming at him that he was not to say that when they talked to reporters again. So, the very next morning, this kid, convinced he has to keep quiet and trying to remember the lines fed to him the night before, is so nervous when on the national morning TV shows he throws up. It makes me sick to think about it myself.

It is a sad situation that, I fear, extends to much of the world these days. People want to be famous so badly they are willing to do the most horrible things. The attention the 24-hours news channels give these people just feeds into the minds of the truly desperate. In the end, you have what they call a vicious circle and one that, somehow, needs to be broken.
