March boredom: I hate the NCAA Tournament
March 15th 2010 18:51
It amazes me how people get around this time of year. I would love to say that it was only men who got this dazed look in their eye every time March rolled around but, unfortunately, it seems there are a fair number of women who get as bleary-eyed as the men. I am talking about the exercise in profound stupidity and boredom known as the NCAA Basketball Tournament, also known as “March Madness.”
Madness, I would agree, is the perfect description of the fever that grips people. I went to a school that had a basketball team. However, my school played in some Z-grade, dusty, forgotten corner of college sports. Our team played most of my years there at local high school gyms. The players seemed to be mostly the exchange students from places like Korea and the team was just dreadful. Sports were not a major factor at my school.
I have no problem watching college football. I even have a team I generally choose to follow in the form of the Northwestern Wildcats. They are the one school fairly close to where I grew up, so there is a proximity sort of thing on here. However, I also just happen to love the sport of football. I love watching football on almost every level. I even have watched high school football games that end up on local cable channels around here.
The same cannot be said for basketball. This was not always the case. However, I firmly admit to being a specialized basketball fan. I was a fan of basketball when Michael Jordan was playing for the Chicago Bulls and helping them win six championships. However, once he retired and retired for good, I lost all interest. Even in years since (which have been few) when the Bulls have done well, I still find myself wholly uninterested. Last season they even put up a good fight against Boston in the first round of the playoffs and I did not watch a single game.
I also did not attend any of the schools that are playing. I cannot root for a team, I find, if I cannot find at least some connection to it. Since the Webster Gorlocks are never going to be in the NCAA Tournament, I am likely to never have a team to root for. I just cannot care less about any of the teams, not even the small schools. There was a school that was fairly small a couple of years back that was mildly interesting, but I did not watch any of their games. I did watch when the Illini made it into the finals one year, but only because I was invited over to a friend’s house to watch the game…which they lost.
So, during the month of March, I do all I can to avoid watching college basketball. I do not watch ESPN. I would rather watch Olympic Curling, again, than watch a single NCAA Tournament game. Hell, I am all for doing another Winter Olympics, right now, and skipping this profound exercise in boredom involving a sport I also find profoundly dull.
Thankfully, baseball is about to start. There is sill the end of the NHL season, as well. So, there are sports for me to watch and keep occupied. Also, “Lost” is on and in its last season, so I have shows that can keep me entertained. I just will NOT be tuning into anything resembling college basketball in this, or any other, mad month.
