In Rod we laugh

The state of Illinois is notorious for being corrupt and for having corrupt governors. That is just part of living in Illinois. I am sure a lot of people would like to blame it all on Chicago’s influence, but I think it just has something to do with government. However, in the annals of crime and corruption in the governor’s office, Rod Blagojevich has to take the prize.
I have to confess something and it is not something I am proud of. But the first time Rod ran for the office I actually voted for the guy. Sorry about that. I actually thought he would be better than the guy who was in the office previously, a Republican guy named Ryan. Ryan is now in prison, so that gives you some idea of what was going on before Rod showed up. I actually thought this young guy with the silly hair might make some changes.
The thing was I had no idea the guy was nuts. I am saying this as a non-psychologist and, of course, nothing I say here should be taken as absolute fact. As of right now, the guy has not been convicted of anything, but he was forcefully removed from office, so something had to be up, right? It’s hard to tell because the guy has been walking around singing like Elvis and acting like an idiot since the whole thing started.
Barrack Obama was a senator here in Illinois, you see. So, when he got elected President his seat was left empty. The governor could then appoint someone to fill that seat until the next election or call for a separate election. Well, Rod apparently tried to sell that seat which is something you shouldn’t do. At least, that is the allegation. It got him kicked out of office and there are charges pending against him and his trial will probably start sometime in 2010.
Now, this is pretty standard corruption. What sets Rod apart is how incredibly incompetent he was about it. The Feds got him on tape saying, loudly, what he wants for the empty senate seat and then his wife chimed in at some point saying she wanted something too. He did everything but write his demands in smoke in the sky in fifty-mile-high letters.
Now he has a book out. It is called “The Governor.” He also has a website. He also has been showing up on radio shows and hosting radio shows. He continues to assert that he is innocent and there is just this feeling of desperation about him. He is like that Martin Short lawyer character from SCTV who would sit there shaking and smoking with a sheen of sweat covering his face and on his upper lip.
I have no idea what is in this book. I am quite sure he is saying he is innocent. He is convinced that Pat Quinn, his Lieutenant Governor who is now Governor, railroaded him out of office so that he could step in and raise taxes. Well, Quinn has stepped in and he has said he wants to raise taxes, but he has also done a lot of things I think are good for the state. He even backed down and refused to sign a bill he originally supported because the public and other senators were against it. You have to admire a man willing to say he made a mistake and back down.
Blago never admits he made a mistake. He whines like a leaky balloon. He walks around like a bad hair-do with legs. He writes books and whines online. All in all, it makes you wonder how the rest of the world can keep a straight face when they talk about Illinois.
