Human nature

March 26th 2010 13:30
It would be nice if I could believe in humanity the way so many people want to. There are honestly people out there who want to believe that people are “inherently good.” I am sad to report, that this is not the case. It is a human being’s inherent arrogance that makes us believe that we are somehow “better” than the base animals we deem to keep as pets.

Human beings are inherently selfish, petty, greedy creatures. Anyone who does manage to get above those inherent natures, should be praised. However, the fact is, most people don’t. In fact, most people who achieve any kind of wealth are generally the kind of people who have those traits in spades. This is why the idea of “greed” somehow being a good thing is patently ridiculous.

I have seen a lot of people debating these days and screaming like children who have had their ice cream cone taken from them. They want to know why it is “greedy” to, as some have said, “keep what they earn.” I am not saying that people should not keep what they earn, and wanting to keep it is not greedy, but “earning” an excessive amount and wanting to keep every BIT of it? That is greedy and that serves no one but yourself. I fear, however, that most people who earn wealth are exactly that way, because that is how they earn their wealth in the first place. You don’t get wealthy by making friends with your competition. You destroy the competition by any means necessary.,

A good example of someone with wealth who seems to be trying to do good is Bill Gates. However, let us not forget that he got that wealth by systematically crushing and destroying any potential competition that ever reared its head. He was a very big purveyor of the most brutal corporate tactics to get to be at the top of the heap. He and his wife are doing good things now (I am assuming here, since I do not keep their books), but he sure was ruthless while he was in business.

That’s why I feel this idea of just letting people help people on their own is ridiculous. If we don’t pay into the system to fix healthcare for the people who cannot afford it, more people will die from lack of health care and that is unacceptable. It is certainly unacceptable in a society that wants to claim itself “civil” (and I would suggest recent behavior counts against us being anywhere near that). If you ban abortion, what are you going to do with the glut of unwanted and abandoned children? Won’t that cost more as we have to pay higher taxes to expand government agencies like the Department of Children and Family Services here in Illinois?

It would be great if every person who achieved some kind of wealth was so grateful for the rest of the world that helped him or her get there that he or she felt like giving back. The fact is, most of them probably do not. All greed does it make them want more. They want more money, more mansions, more cars and more everything else.

So, paying into the system is something the government has to step in and make happen. This is the truth and reality of the world we live in. This is the truth and reality of humanity. If it doesn’t, then nothing gets done. Nothing trickles down. No one who needs help, gets the help. You may not like the idea of the government stepping in and doing these things, but in a modern, realistic, practical society, that is what has to happen.

You can add any “ism” you want to that concept. I honestly don’t care. Like most humans, I am as base and animalistic as the rest. I want to achieve wealth. I am, however, prepared to give the government a portion of that wealth, to then give to people who can benefit from it. I am prepared for that because I feel it’s right.
