Finding the truth

September 25th 2009 13:33
The first thing I say whenever some political pundit starts spouting off about something and declaring it as truth is, how can I verify that? I am a firm believer that the very last place you should go, ever, to find your political news and to find the truth is some conservative or liberal mouthpiece. I don’t care if you run to Olbermann or Savage or Maddow or Limbaugh, you should not believe a single word that comes out of their mouths without running to a newspaper, computer, or library to look up the information and verify it for yourself.

Right now there is a video going around that shows a bunch of kids supposedly singing a song praising Barack Obama. It was forwarded to me by a conservative friend who heard about it first on a show by a guy named Mike Savage. I know nothing about this guy. I had never heard of him before I heard about him from this friend. What I do know is that his another conservative mouthpiece who is only going to spout things that support his own conservative agenda. If the Democrats emerged from a room with the cure for cancer, he would still find fault with it.

OK, so, I watched the video. It does show kids who look about first grade age singing a song that celebrates the president. This is being held up as some kind of evil thing. Given the hands of the conservatives you would think that Obama had passed some kind of law last week that required the children of America to sing his praises every morning before school started. I don’t seem to recall that law being passed, do you?

My questions are many. Where was this filmed? Are we sure it’s legit? What happened before and after the camera rolled? Was this for some school play? Did the teachers write the song? Was this all a joke perpetrated by the teachers and recruiting the kids in the joke? In what context was this song created and in what context are these kids singing it?

Even if it turns out the kids really are singing some song of praise about Obama and the teachers wrote the song and taught them to sing it, the blame cannot and should not be laid at the foot of the president. It is not like he walked into that school and sent his minions after the class, holding the children’s parents hostage, and forced them to learn this song about him that he had written. If anyone should be questioned and held responsible, I would think, it would be the teachers. Why are they teaching this song to the kids? What was the purpose?

You take that and take it out of context, you scream about it hysterically, and you wave it around and scream that Obama is indoctrinating the nation’s children, and that is exactly what it looks like Well, years ago I heard a clip from the Art Bell show where he claimed it was the sounds of hell. A letter he read claimed it was a recording she had gotten from her father when he was digging in Siberia and punched through into Hell itself. He then played the noise and, sure enough, after hearing him read that and him telling me that was what it was, it sure sounded like the sounds of Hell. However, had he read a letter saying it was a recording of crowd noises recorded at a local mall during the Christmas rush and then played it, well, it would have sounded just like that too.

We have to stop the hysteria. We have to stop listening to people who stand firm only on one side or the other. We need to find things out for ourselves. We need to search for the truth, because these people with their radio and TV news shows, are sure as hell not going to bring it to us.
