Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics
June 16th 2009 13:41
Back in 1904, the legend goes, Chicago was being considered for the host city for the Olympics. According to legend, the city was close to getting the games. However, then the St. Louis people stepped up and complained. They said that the city of Chicago had just had the huge World’s Fair and that they had better facilities. There are rumors of bribes and other under-handed dealings from the St. Louis people. Whatever happened, St. Louis ended up with the Olympics in 1904.
Personally, having lived in both cities, I believe that the St. Louis people were liars and did bad things to get the Olympics. They are an under-handed lot there in that town. They have a particular chip on their shoulder about being in relatively close proximity (on a galactic scale) to the larger (and better) city of Chicago. If they could stab Chicago in the back, they would.
So, I am waiting for them to show up and do something to sabotage Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. St. Louis is not in the running, however, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Brazil or something was in league with St. Louis to get the Olympics down there. I am telling you, you have to watch the St. Louis people.
Mayor Daley is practically foaming at the mouth about trying to get these games. I have been put off by the whole thing because the man in charge of the Chicago Olympic Committee is Pat Ryan and he was the head of Aon Corporation when I worked for them. I hate that company with an all-consuming passion that scares me. If you ever are faced with the decision of working for Aon or poking your eye out with a sharp stick, seriously consider the sharp stick.
So, for me, they came out of the gate with the wrong people. If Chicago does end up with the games, it will be interesting around here. Construction season is going to be even more intense as they build something they are calling “collapsible” stadiums. To me, the words “collapsible” and “stadium” should never be paired together in any sentence.
Chicago is already an international city. You can walk a few feet and feel like you are in India. Then a few blocks away and you are in South America. A few more blocks and you might as well be in Poland and then there’s China and Japan and Korea too. We are already united into one big United Nations.
I am not sure if getting the games will be as wonderful as the committee people seem to think it will be. They are sure pitching it hard. However, it seems to me that it will bring chaos and that the scarred and pitted streets will seem even more so during that time.
Still, I keep waiting for St. Louis to do something. Look at them over there…with their “Arch.” You just can’t trust ‘em.
