Chicago weather Part Two: Complainers

June 24th 2009 14:23
If there is one sport that unites all Chicagoans, well, it would probably truly be football. The city is at war with itself all summer long as Cubs and Sox fans fight it out in one of the most pathetic and stilly rivalries in baseball. Let New Yorkers fight over baseball teams, people! At the same time, boy those Cubs fans are sure annoying, aren’t they?

Anyway, the second thing that unites Chicagoans is complaining about the weather. Oh, lord, do Chicagoans love to complain about the weather. We get together in groups and spend time talking about it. While in other parts of the world when the discussion turns to weather that means things are winding down and boring, in Chicago it’s one of the first things you talk about.

The problem is that we love to complain so much that vast inconsistencies develop. The same people who complain like their lives depend on it about how cold it is in winter are often some of the same people complaining when it is August and so hot you can chew the air. Yes, we do get hot weather here in Chicago.

Most people who do not live here think that Chicago was built on ice flows somewhere near the Arctic Circle. I cannot tell you how many times I have talked with someone who lives, say, in the south where it is so hot no one should reasonably be able to live, will say, “I could never live in Chicago, it’s too cold there!” Then they are often surprised to hear me tell them the air temps reach into the triple-digits in July and August and that we have actual beaches that people use like the beaches near the ocean but without the sharks and salt.

I am not a warm weather guy. Right now, as I write this, we are experiencing a very early heat-wave. I am not happy. Yes, I did complain a bit about the weather this winter. That’s because right around Thanksgiving, in November, the temps dropped to what felt like -50 degrees and then just stayed there. Normally we get a few warm-ups in there. This was the second winter in a row when that happened. You could do nothing but curl up and try and stay warm inside.

Of course, I don’t go out when it gets this hot either. I just make quick, mad dashes from one air conditioned place to another. If I could crawl into my fridge during much of the summer and not get out until Fall, I would be happy to do that.

What irritates me, though, are the people who, just a few weeks ago, were complaining about how cool and rainy it was are going to start complaining about how hot it is. Yes, it’s hot, but two weeks ago you wanted it hot so now shut up about it! Me, I would prefer the sky be clear with a breeze off of the Lake and the temps in the low to mid-70s. To me, that is perfect weather.

We don’t get Spring and Fall anymore, though. We go right from winter to the middle of summer. Then November hits and we miss Fall and go right into winter. Oh sure, and the Earth is fine and there’s nothing wrong with the atmosphere and there’s no evidence that it has anything to do with all of the pollution we put in the air. Right, people.

Now, I am going to try and stay cool. You may not see me again until September.
