Chicago wants the Olympics

July 28th 2009 13:27
Coming soon to a television near you will be a commercial begging you to support the 2016 Summer Olympics here in Chicago. This is because Chicago is the only city in the United States currently in contention for the games. It is a dramatic commercial filled with lots of people doing Olympic-like things in slow motion while the music plays and swells dramatically and there are a few shots of the Chicago skyline.

Chicago deserves the Olympics. This is a very international city. I know that most people think that Chicago is full of Irish cops or fat people with mustaches, but the fact is we have the entire world in a very small space. You can visit China town and then Korea town while stopping by a heavily Indian area and then visit a Vietnamese restaurant before heading home to a mostly Latino neighborhood to rest your head. The entire world is already here, why not bring the athletes and the rest of the world?

The problem is that people wonder what kind of mess this is going to make if we get the games. The mayor seems very high on the idea of bringing the Olympics. Yet, stories keep coming out of this city that seem embarrassing to the efforts. Who wants to come to this town and celebrate sports when there are people digging up bodies and reselling the gravesites. Or who wants to come here when one of the most corrupt governors the state has ever seen comes from the city?

It helps to have the President of the United States be from the area. It also helps that he is the first African American President and that he comes from here. Of course, 2016 is a long way away and that is plenty of time for any President to get himself entangled in some kind of embarrassing scandal or another. Let’s hope our current guy manages to avoid this, but being from Chicago, you can never be too sure.

Our roads are generally a mess. I am trying to imagine some of the world’s most famous athletes arriving at their events with their spines broken from dropping off into potholes. Or, the opposite could happen and the streets from the athlete’s village to the venues will be as smooth as glass while the rest of the city is vanishing slowly, a bus at a time, in potholes that have made the transition into sinkholes.

The city is going to have to build some new stadiums. They will mostly likely be on the lake and toward the southern end of the downtown area. However, the stadiums they are choosing to build they call “collapsible.” I would give advice that they may want to change that description. Any multi-level structure that is supposed to be filled with thousands of people should never be paired with the word “collapse.” Just a suggestion there, folks, but you do whatever you want.

I would also remove Pat Ryan as the head of the Olympic committee. I have my own personal grudge against the white-haired gentleman since he was once the CEO of a horrible company called Aon. I have to blame someone for the misery that turned a decent place to work into a living nightmare, so I am placing it on his white-haired head.

Beyond that, I think the city is doing a fine job. Perhaps the Olympics can remove the “gangster” image of Chicago. At the same time, what do you want to bet that during the opening ceremonies, when they do the “history of the venue” part, they have dancers drive up in 1920s automobiles and come out dancing in pinstripe suits and carrying tommy guns?
