America

People around this country like to get all misty-eyed over the place. I know, America is a great place. We have more freedom here than most places. All-in-all, America does a pretty good job. Even though there is a lot of noise and people are really upset about things right now, at least we live in a place where people can get upset like that and scream and yell at their elected officials. That has to be count for something.
Here is the thing, though, I don’t think that America is the end-all, be-all of countries and governments. I love my country, and don’t get me wrong about it, but I certainly don’t think everything here is the best way or the right way. What I cannot understand is why people are SO crazy right now about the things our current president is trying to do.
The problem now is that there is so much mis-information, it’s impossible to tell what’s truth and what’s lies and what’s really happening. If you believe a certified lunatic like Glenn Beck then Obama is actually Joseph Stalin with a tan. There are people running around acting like they wish they could resurrect Joseph McCarthy and start the House Un-American Activities Committee. Just yesterday I read someone calling Obama’s plans “Marxist.”
For me, I don’t understand why trying to help other people is seen as something “Communist.” To me, that is all the president has been trying to do. At the same time, he is also being criticized for talking about actually talking to other countries before going to war. The previous administration’s attitude tended to be bomb first and ask questions later. I don’t see why seeing if there isn’t a peaceful solution first is a bad thing. I think it takes a much stronger man, and a much stronger country, to seek peace first before striking.
When you get into a fight, it’s easy to just start swinging. You just ball up your fist and start swinging and maybe you hit someone. Does it really solve anything? Most of the time, it really doesn’t. Sure, if you seriously injure or kill the other person, maybe it resolves one thing but then it just opens up a host of new problems for you. You know, like invading a country that had nothing to do with the attack on your country and not having any kind of exit plan or strategy?
So much of the world considers America a bunch of hot-heads. Canada just shakes its collective head and laughs at us and they have for a long time. I spent some time in Canada at one point in my life and the entire country cannot figure out why America feels it needs to but its head into every other country’s business and why we feel we have to attack every country that doesn’t agree with us. They consider themselves peace-keepers whereas we are the peace-breakers. They feel it goes all the way back to the Revolutionary War. Canada is its own country and didn’t have to fire a shot against England, they say, so we just started out on the wrong foot here in America.
I am not quite willing to go that far. At the same time, I do wish everyone would take a bit of a time out and relax. No one is a Marxist. No one is a Communist. We’re just trying to make ourselves a smarter, calmer, more compassionate country. I don’t see that as bad.
