Abstinence Only? Srsly?

Ok, so what is the deal here? How in the name of all that is good and pure (no pun intended) do people not understand that teenagers rarely, and I mean VERY rarely, give a hairy rat's bootay about what your beliefs regarding premarital and teen sex are?
Abstinence only education does. not. work. people. In my opinion, abstinence only education is a cop out for parents, guardians, and teachers because it gives them the easy out. They don't have to broach the uncomfortable topic of sex with their precious little angel babies. But guess what Moms and Dads, you can be as delusional as you choose to be, but your little angel babies are dirty whores in their little teenage minds. Teens think about sex more than most adults. It's the way they're programmed. Hormones don't have a conscious, and teens are like little newborn vampires, thirsting for a bite of human flesh. They can not control their hormones as well as you hope and pray they can.
When I was a teen, I was taugh sex education in all four years of high school. And even before those years, Mom and Dad both sat down with me and discussed protection. They strongly advised that I just NOT have sex, of course, but they were realistic about it. I thought about sex a lot after about age 13 or so. I fantasized about my high school crush and dreamed what it would be like to be alone in his room. I'm not ashamed of that anymore. But OH! The thought of those videos we had to watch in Phys. Ed! The horror! And also, the consequence I most feared, the sexually transmitted condition commonly known as pregnancy. I couldn't even fathom what it would have been like to have to break the news to my parents.
I graduated high school a virgin. Believe it! And I'm not an ogre, by any means. Mostly, I was too lazy to do anything about my hormones other than daydream about Tony or Jason or Eric or whoever my current lust object was.
I know there is a whole wide world of people who feel they simply can not address the subject of intercourse with their children due to religious reasons.
Disclaimer: I respect your religion and your choice to follow it. Do not misinterpret what I am about to say in any way.
My Daddy was a Baptist Minister. I could tell ya some stories! Woo!
Guess what, folks, the teens usually don't care what the Bible says about sex with multiple people, sex with the same gender, sex before marriage, etc. And I know what some of you might be thinking right now: "My teen is a youth leader at my church! He sets the example for other children!"
What do you think goes on at youth religious retreats after all the hailing and praising and singing is over? They go back to their cabins or their hotel rooms and they sneak out and they... do stuff! Not all of them, naturally, but church camps are quite often on par with band camps in the things-that-would-surprise-an d-horrify-you department.
And believe you me, there are no latex prophylactics available on hand in the front office of the youth retreat building. So you had better hope your sweet little angel faced brat paid attention in Phys. Ed. when they showed the Herpes and Genital Warts videos! I know I did, that stuff was nastay!
And just to back up my claim that abstinence only education is for suckers with some political ammunition: Vice-President hopeful Palin is a ginormous (it's a word!) advocate of abstinence only education. Guess what, world, her 17 year old daughter, Bristol (like the city in Alaska or like the sketchbook medium?) is knockered up. *GASP* The Republican and Christian Right is completely shocked and shaken by this revelation.
(Side note: I don't think it's right that opponents use a politician's children in their quest to muddy the name of the parent. That's messed up, yo!)
I am not one tiny little iota of surprised. Not even a little bit. I am not saying Palin is a bad mother, far from it. My point is that you can be the greatest parent on the planet, but if you don't give youre children all of the information available on a subject, you are doing them an injustice. And again, Palin is probably a great mother, and I have no issues with her personal decision in her own household.
As the saying goes, it just goes to show ya.
