A love letter to Chicago

January 6th 2010 22:10
Dear Chicago,

I look at you now and I still cannot believe the feelings I have for you. Sure, you’re frozen now, looking harder and colder than ever with your steel buildings and sidewalks and streets filled with snow and ice. A lot of people like to complain about you during this time of year. I don’t. I prefer to love you all the more during this time of year. It’s like you throw on make up or something with the covering of snow and manage to look cleaner and more beautiful than ever during this time of year.

A lot of people love to spend time complaining about you. They say all kinds of things that don’t really make a lot of sense. For example, they love to complain about the mayor.

Sure, taxes could be lower, but I bet there isn’t anyone, anywhere, in this country who doesn’t have something to complain about when it comes to their taxes. I cannot imagine who they would want in his place? You are safer to walk in these days than every before. You look more beautiful with the parks in place of a useless airport and the flowers along the Magnificent Mile. More people are moving down into the city than running away from it these days. When was the city run better? During which mayor?

I think your weather is the small price we pay to live in one of the greatest cities in the world. There are more great restaurants in you, Chicago, than any other city. I’d put any restaurant here against any restaurant in New York and I bet we’d win. Those of us who live here know that the thick pizza is for the tourists, but we also know you never put ketchup on a hot dog.

Your buildings stand taller. Your streets seem a little straighter. Your skyline is more beautiful. Your lake is like being on an ocean without having to worry about salt and sharks and things like that.

There is nothing like a Chicago skyline seen from the lake itself. To see your buildings standing tall and strong and beautiful is like nothing else in the world. Paris may have the name of the City of Lights, but I would put your lights against that town filled with such tiny buildings any day of the week. They can keep their Eiffel Tower, we have the Sears Tower (it will never bee Willis Tower) and the John Hancock Building. I am still getting used to the Trump Tower that takes up much of the middle these days.

You burned down and came back stronger. You have survived corruption and disasters big and small. You have been the home to gangsters and killers and sports losers and sports champions. You have been flooded. You have baked in the heat. You have been buried in snow. Yet, each time, you come back stronger, brighter, better.

I can think of no place I would rather live. I can think of no city that matches your class, your working class attitudes, your beauty, your fun and your overall feel. You are a real city. You are the place I always want to be associated with. You are Chicago and I will always be one of yours.
