A Look at Healthcare

July 23rd 2009 13:34
Healthcare is certainly not just a Chicago thing. In fact, I bet that my stance on healthcare is not the majority here in Chicago. Although Chicago his historically Democrat, the fact is most of the working-class stiffs who live here are not very liberal about a lot of things. I am betting many of them are not too liberal about healthcare because the idea of having universal healthcare means raising taxes and we are already taxed through our eyeballs here in Chicago, thank you very much.

However, the President in coming to town to talk about his healthcare plans and so I feel it’s time to talk about this particular subject. I feel that universal healthcare is something that should happen and that people should just find a way to cough up the cash to pay for it. Anyone who disagrees needs to spend a little time either without healthcare or working for a health insurance company.

I worked for a health insurance company. I worked in the marketing department. I saw just how insidious and evil these companies were. They care only about money, which is supposed to be the American way, but I think there has to be a line drawn when it comes to taking care of people who are sick. When it comes to covering people and taking care of them, the idea of how much money you can make off of them should go right out the window.

The politicians like to scare people by saying that a bureaucrat will be put between you and getting healthcare. I have news for you, they are already there. What is a bureaucrat? Basically they are low-paid paper-pushers working cubicles who stare at paper and computer screens all day and make seemingly arbitrary decisions about things based on spreadsheets and tables. Who the hell do you think works for health insurance companies? I know, because I was one of them. There is someone who decides if your doctor should be in the network and processors who deny or accept your claims and there are a seemingly infinite number of bureaucrats between you and your health care already.

So, that is an entirely moot point. It should not scare anyone unless they think that the big gigantic health insurance company is somehow seriously and carefully studying their health insurance claims and cooing and moaning over their claims and acting like they actually give a damn about anyone who is on their plans. All you are to any insurance company is a number and when your number no longer looks like it might be a profitable one, all they want to do is get you off their plans because now you cost them money.

I work for myself, for the most part. I have to have my own insurance. I hate it. The premiums just keep going up but the benefits offered to me by the insurance company never expand. At the same time, thanks to the economy, my income has not increased in a couple of years. So, the insurance company takes more, offers less and I am left worrying every time I need to visit a doctor.

Just because there are other countries that offer socialized medicine and their systems do not work perfectly doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. In fact, there are countries that have great socialized medicine. Why not stop using the flaws evident in Canada and Great Britain as an excuse and come up with a real solution that covers the people who need it.

I’ll be the first in line.
